Mainstage Technootjes

Nick Curly

Nick Curly can look back on an enthralling two year spell where his package of killer productions, red-hot record labels and captivating DJ sets have combined to make him one of the most talked about artists to arrive on to the underground scene.

This summer, he takes his career to a new level when he launches his DJ residency at Space Ibiza and provides one of the mixes in the latest instalment of the iconic ‘Cocoon Ibiza Summer’ compilation series, alongside Marco Carola.

Producing records since 2005 and, at that time, only a well known name in Germany’s Rhein-Ruhr area, Nick’s early releases on murmur, Supernature, 8 bit and Plastic City laid the groundwork and lit the fuse in the mid 00’s, before subsequent tracks like ‘Pujante’ (Cocoon), and the Cecille releases ‘Stuntman’ and ‘Dubnoise’ saw Nick explode out of the domestic German scene and on to the worldwide stage for the first time. The big names were not slow to identify his talent and hugely well received remixes soon followed on Get Physical, Liebe*Detail, Mobilee and Saved.

As a creator of taste, Nick has taken his Cecille and Cecille Numbers labels, that he run together with Marc Scholl, into the stratosphere since their inception, delivering one dancefloor smash 12” after another and, in the process, helped launch the careers of acts such as Markus Fix, SIS, Robert Dietz and Alex Celler. More recently, his work together with partner Gorge on his ‘other’ label 8 Bit Records has consistently been hitting the highest heights and Nick now finds himself in the enviable position of having three of the top 20 charted labels on Resident Advisor’s esteemed DJ charts each month.

Tobi Neumann

Music has always played a major part in Tobi Neumann’s life - from day one. Born and raised in Vienna (Austria) and Munich (Germany), he grew up surrounded by classical music and soon went on to experiment with the piano and guitar he was meant to learn. Moonlighting in a number of bands, his interests shifted to pop music and studio technology; later on, he delved into the tricks of the trade as part of a four-year sound engineering course. Ever since the early 1990s, Neumann has been flexing his creative muscles as a freelance sound engineer for movie and TV productions while building up his own sound studios to record and mix bands. Together with his friends and fellow band members Peter Horn and Martin Probst he went on to write and produce film and advertising soundtracks, strongly influenced by electronic sounds and rhythms, such as Brian Eno’s epic, expansive oeuvre.

For Tobi Neumann, 1996 proved to be a turning point. At his first ever Berlin Love Parade, he had an epiphany. Immediately hooked on House, Techno and club culture, he went out to buy decks, a mixing desk and a stack of 12-inches, determined to become a DJ. Influenced and inspired by the intensity and immediacy of playing and mixing live, he followed a monthly residency at Munich’s Muffathalle (1997) with Flokati, his own weekly spot at the city’s legendary Techno club Ultraschall (from 1998). A perennial club scene favourite and Munich’s most successful Underground House night for many years running, his nights attracted special guests like Ata, Steve Bug, Luke Solomon, Karotte, Hans Nieswandt, Chez Damier and countless of other luminaries. At the same time, Flokati served as the best possible proving ground for Tobi Neumann - here, he could fine-tune his own sense and feel of the club’s moods and flavours, a skill no self-respecting DJ or promoter could do without. Simultaneously, he was a founding member and producer of art/sound hybrid Chicks on Speed, adding his unique touch to full-blown hits like ‘Eurotrash Girl’ or ‘Kaltes Klares Wasser’. As part of Glove, a production team also featuring fellow producer and musician Thies Mynther, he crafted countless of remixed for a. o. Egoexpress, Ladytron and Cocoon’s surprise hit ‘Drogenkontrolle’, produced a number of albums (Miss Kittin, Chicks on Speed) and a 12" on Playhouse. In 2001, Neumann moved to Berlin where a new flat, new studio and plenty of new friends were already waiting.

Inspired by Berlin and Frankfurt’s music and club scenes, Tobi Neumann began to focus more and more on his DJ career. In 2002, he joined Sven Väth’s artist agency Cocoon, following regular back-to-back sets with Ricardo Villalobos and residencies at the Cocoon nights in Frankfurt and Ibiza (since 2001). After a string of chart and dance hits, further film and advertising soundtrack productions and many remixes and productions for other artists (see discography), in 2004 Neumann decided to turn his back on the studio to tour the world as a DJ for a full three years. His current residencies include Robert Johnson (Offenbach), Weekend and Watergate in Berlin, Cocoon @ Amnesia (Ibiza) and Fabric in London. Besides regular sets in Europe’s metropoles and at all the name festivals, his sets have taken Neumann as far as Japan and to almost every corner of North and South America.

Hoge Toon vs Miguel
Hoge Toon

Miguel

DJ Miguel was born in 1975 in Groningen and started at the age of 11 with electronical music. He discovered his love for the music by listening to radiostations that started to play more and more house music. After visiting a House party in Groningen at the age off 14, he already knew that he wanted to do with the music himself.

The first record he bought in 1992 was the start for an addiction and in a short time he had his first performance in a club, followed by a few performances at local party's. His style back then was groovy and funky dance-music. In all those years he never developed further with his music because he also wanted to study to become a medical researchanalist.

In the year 1999, he met dj K.Cee at a local party in Groningen. It was K.Cee who introduced him to techno-music. After visiting party's and festivals almost every weekend, Miguel really new what he wanted to do with his music. He developed his style from dance, techno to minmal techno.

In 2001 Miguel started with Technootjes and this event was right from the beginning a success. Artists like Paul Brtschitsch, Andre Galluzzi, Tobi Neumann, Luciano, Reinhart Voigt, John Tejada, Stewart Walker, Koze, Superpitcher, ADA, Ricardo Villalobos, Matthew Dear, Dinky, Troy Pierce, LoSoul and many more came to play at this party!

The last couple of years Miguel played more and more on local party's. Miguel played with e.g. Troy Pierce, John Tejada, Matthew Dear, Stewart Walker, Joris Voorn and Bart Skils. In 2004 he was playing at Traffic and on a edition of Technootjes with Ricardo Villalobos

Rik Woldring vs Malbetrieb
Rik Woldring

Rik started playing records around 2001, first he was more into the pounding and harder side of techno. Influenced by Ricardo Villalobos he discovered the more housey and deeper tunes. Nowadays he likes to play old gems together with brand new stuff and he is always searching for undiscovered bombs. Rik is a big fan of longer sets, especially in the morning hours. That’s why Rik has earned his credits as the organizer of the well-known Voltt after parties in the Supperclub. Those who have been there know the crazy mornings at numerous locations in Amsterdam.

Swing, swing, swing, is all we can do when Rik gets in control behind the decks. He should be seen as an artist who understands the new direction of house and how it can be used to create a good and outgoing atmosphere on the dance floor. Rik is busy learning the tricks of producing music. So hopefully in the future we will hear his tunes on the dancefloor.

Malbetrieb

Malbetrieb, in real life better known as Niels Schilder, is a busy man. Not only is he a DJ and a producer. He also is one of the key members of the Klopfgeist crew. A true workaholic blessed with some amazing ‘on the fly’ producing skills, which made him to become one of the most talented and wanted artists of Klopfgeist.

Cutting his first tapes at the age of ten, and organizing his first party at the age of fourteen – ‘We were too young to visit the regular house events, so what do you do? You start your own!’ – Niels grew out to be one of the most promising and innovative artists from Friesland; a province in the north of Holland, which proves to be a fertile ground for techno, minimal and tech-house producers. Andreas Bergmann, Olene Kadar, Conforce and Delta Funktionen, they all started out in Friesland.

Bored by playing other peoples tracks Niels decides to put his DJ career on hold, after leaving the scene for a couple of years Niels returns in 2002 but this time he also starts producing his own material. A Korg MS20, a grating and murmuring Siel Synt and Fasttracker is all he uses to lift his career as a producer. A young and growing label from Leeuwarden starts to show some interests in his productions. Schilder signs at Klopfgeist and soon turns his DJ name into Malbetrieb, which is German for painter and also a variation on his last name in Dutch.

Inspired at a young age by acts such as The Orb, Alan Parsons Project and The Synthesizer Greatest serie, his sound is best to be described as warm, deep, electronic yet emotional but raw. Ranging from ambient to techno, back to oldschool house.

TROUW AMSTERDAM STAGE

Melon

When an 8 year old kid asks for a drum machine and Atari 500 computer with the intention of starting his own band, you know his future does not lie anywhere but in music. Introducing: Jeroen Hofer aka Melon. Not your average human being. Something that becomes obvious the second he enters the room – a beaming, larger than life personality that cannot possibly be ignored. Flair and charisma have never hurt anyone in this business.

Melon is a natural artist, a DJ’s DJ who has managed to gain residencies and regular bookings at some of the world’s finest clubs purely by being great at spinning records, such as Fabric, Robert Johnson or Panorama Bar. His awesome record collection, spanning three decades of dance music, is the base for a unique sound that is always a few steps ahead of the game. Timeless, muscular house in all its glory and variety which can be witnessed at his monthly “Ratio?” residency at Trouw.

Over the last few years, Melon has managed to create a high production profile. “Nitzi” on Innervisions and “Spring” on his own “Ratiomusic?” imprint are incredibly subtle and timeless masterpieces, while his work under his Je Dàvu moniker, such as his infamous re-edit of INXS’s “I Need You Tonight” and “I Zebra” on Platzhirsch, showcases a more rocking side of his repertoire.

Olaf

Love for music has been at the heart of everything Olaf Boswijk has been involved in since he finished the SAE (School for Audio Engineering) in 1999 and landed a job at the Dutch national radiostation New Dance Radio. After the station was bought by ID&T and changed it’s name to Slam!FM and later ID&T Radio, Boswijk was promoted to stationmanager, helping to establish ID&T Radio as the main source of dance music on national radio.

In 2003, feeling the need for fresh inspiration, Boswijk left ID&T to start his own company grand_theft_audio, with which he now organises Dutch events and party’s for labels as Naked Music, Inspirit, Compost, Freerange as well as Welcome to the future and his own monthly Red Hot-events in club NL. But grand_theft_audio is at the heart of many more of Olaf’s activities. He’s a freelance music journalist for ID&T Release, in charge of press & communications for restaurant_bar_club 11 as well as one of the Dutch representatives for the Red Bull Music Academy.

In 2004 he teamed up with Gert van Veen, as producer and host of the weekly Welcome to the future radioshow, which presented the newest electronic music, a weekly album chart and interviews with international DJ’s, producers and promotors. Their succesful radioshow is now taken to the next level with a weekly live internet broadcast from Studio 80, a brand new venue in the heart of Amsterdam experimenting with new music and internet.

As a DJ, Olaf has been keeping a low profile for years. His DJ-team Soul Control (with Jobbe Strobosch) used to be one of the best kept secrets of the Amsterdam deep house-scene. This all changed last year when he started to build a solid name as one of the upcoming DJ talents of Amsterdam, with an eclectic mix of leftfield (deep) house, minimal techno and electro, playing amongs others Winkel van Sinkel, Paradiso, Supperclub, Vaaghuyzen, Vega in Copenhagen (alongside TrentemØller and T.O.M.) and with festivals as Free Your Mind and Rockit Open Air coming up this summer. Olaf is resident in Club NL (Red Hot with Max 404) and Studio 80, where he’s not only radio-DJ but also has a weekly spot in the Welcome to the future clubnight.

Freak Strano vs Riso
Freak Strano

From an early age Freek Wigbold, aka Freak Strano, came into contact with the phenomenon that is house. Partially by his musical background (trumpet and piano), he had an interest in how these house tracks came to be. This interest let him to create a sound which is best specified as a euphoric blend of musicality and depth.

What all started with simple producing programs such as Ejay and Music Maker has now become a ‘professional hobby’ with a summer 2009 release on Noir Music. The track ‘My friend is a cloud’ is a co-production of Sebastian Davidson and Freak Strano and has been a positive boost to some more releases on the dutch "Klopfgeist" label (such as 'Buttefly Effect' and 'The Escape'). As one of Groningen’s regularly seen DJ’s, Freak Strano is now known for his melancholic sound which varies from deephouse to hints of progressive with a profound emphasis on organic sounds.

So, is Freek Wigbold a techno DJ trapped in a deep house DJ's body? Maybe so, but once you get over the initial shock of this melancholic producer playing such physical cuts, you've given into the jacking impulse enough to realize that Freak Strano's productions and his favorite tracks to spin are both deeply emotional and full on physical. One's just a bit better for partying—something that Freek knows well.

Riso

Riso, born in Nijmegen, started playing records at his friends parties when he was still young. When he moved to Groningen for his study, he started playing at local parties. But since he was the winner of a local dj contest, he became more famous in the scene.

Nowadays Riso is playing Disco, House and Techno music. He can look back on performances at Cocoon, Technootjes, Planet Rose, Drift, Simplon, Tomorrow, Schmoov, Casa, Te Smerig, Stiletto, Weekbreek, Progressive City, Beatsball festival, Treats and many many more.. He is also busy with producing his own records, and organizing parties ('Housewarming').

Riso is a resident dj from Pand48.

Navar vs Neo Young
Navar

Navar, whose civic name is Eelko Wijnja can be best described as a real “studio Junky”. At the age of only 13, this youngster from Friesland discovered Fruityloops (FL studio) and since that, music makes a big part of his life.

Navar is inspired by a broad range of different genres. This is also reflected in his music. His music can be best described as deep, melodic and definitely danceable. His last releases on ‘’Klopfgeist’’ get support from artists such as Pole Folder, Eelke Kleijn, Fransesco Pico and many more.

Recently his track “Verbeeldingskracht” (Faculty of imagination) was released which precisely approved his imagination and creativity. With an exciting remix from the well-known “king of house” Boris Werner” Navar definitely made it into the picture!

However, his daily life as a cook and producer makes a good combination. Nevertheless, we assume that his toque will be replaced soon by headphones. Navar is standing at the beginning of his musically journey without an end in sight…

Neo Young

Andreas Bergmann vs Milan Meyberg
Andreas Bergmann

Have you ever heard the tail of the friendly bald DJ that lives up in the North of Holland?... Then you must have heard about Andreas Bergmann. Andreas is mixing for 15 years now, and for the the last five years he played under his alias Andreas Bergmann. Andreas has an Interresting career so far. He played on the biggest festivals and clubs in Holland and has played in several countrys like Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Turkey. Leeuwarden (Holland) is his homebase for the music.

Together with some close friends Andreas started a party organization in 2004 named 'Arthouse'. This organization concentrates on deephouse, techhouse and techno. Or as we say it: 'Cutting Edge House Music'. The monthly Nights at Doozo (Leeuwarden) are not only popular for the music but even more for the ambience arthouse creates. That's why DJ's like Lauhaus, Nuno dos Santos, Michel de Hey and Remy love to come and spin the wheels. To bring his productions skills to the next level, Andreas locked himself up in the studio for some time. This resulted in a more techy, yet deep sound.

In 2007 he joined the label Klopfgeist (www.klopfgeist.com). He released a number of tracks like: 'I Want To Buy A Dog (including a Lauhaus Remix), 'Slippery When Wet' and 'I Will Only Say This Once'. The last EP he released on Klopfgeist was 'The Big Hangover' and was a big hit! Support by 'Richie Hawtin', 'Mihalis Safras', 'Behrouz', 'Troy Pierce' and many more, but there is much more to be released on Klopfgeist in 2011. So keep your ears and eyes open, Andreas Bergmann is one to watch!

Milan Meyberg

At the age of 15 Milan was introduced to genres in music called House and Techno. Intrigued by these innovative sounds from Chicago and Detroit, he became aware of a profound passion for electronic music. Now, almost ten years later, Milan’s entire life revolves around dance music and event organisation.

His music career started to take shape in 2006, when Milan enrolled to study at the Academy for Popculture. Shortly after, he founded the events organization “Eye Nexus” and provided the city of Groningen with an innovative event platform for creative students, and artists from the northern provences of the Netherlands.

During the following years, Eye Nexus succesfully launched the “Our World” concept, an event held aboard a renovated cargo vessel, and the “BeatsBall Festival” at the Groningen City Beach. Early 2010 Milan also launched the Eye Nexus broadcast concept, with a weekly radioshow on XT3 Techno radio, and live video and radio broadcasts from all over the Netherlands.

Besides being an organiser, Milan also made a name for himself as a DJ, with a residency at Pand48 and recently signing at DAG Booking. Having a packed schedule, one might say Groningen has become a base of operations for this talented entrepeneur.

So what to expect during his DJ sets? Deep, warm, pounding grooves, tailormade to the venue where he is playing. Be it a sunny beach in Greece, a city rooftop bar, or an underground club, he knows how to match his sound to the occasion.

Sigward

Jelle Kuipers

Jelle Kuipers is a Rotterdam based electronic music producer and live-act, also known under the moniker Plan d'Aqua.

Hesz

This friendly guy from the north of Holland is born with music. On the age of four he used his mothers kitchen utensils as percussion. A few years later he became a member of the local drumfire. He invented and wrote his own rhythms and recorderded them.

When Hesz, real name Hessel, turned 14, he came in contact with housemusic for the first time. Thanks to a track of Robert Miles, called Childeren, he definitely became interested into house music. In this period Hesz did spend a lot of time in record stores, searching for proper vinyl records. He became a shopaholic. He bought a lot trance and techno records, till he found a record store in Amsterdam where he discovered his second nature: Progressive.
Nowadays you can still hear some progressive influences when Hesz is playing behind the decks. Hesz has his own sound, which is known for spherically and musicality. In the last few years Hessel played in some very intresting venues throughout Holland and abroad. Places like Studio 80, Stubnitz, Club M.I.K.Z. en Doornroosje are only just to name a few.

Hessel is also one of the founders of Arthouse, which was founded in 2004. Arthouse is an organisation which focuses on events with deephouse, techhouse en techno as thread. A lot of (inter)national artists like Anja Schneider, Lauhaus, Michel de Hey, Remy and Nuno Dos Santos has performed on Arthouse-events.
Recently Arthouse has joined forces with quality music label Klopfgeist..

Besides organising events, Hesz now focuses more time on his production and dj career.
Everyting he did archieve in the past few years is just the start of what we can expect from this talented Dutchman.

Entrance Stage

Nadia Struiwigh

In 2010 door Estroe genoemd als aanstormend talent.
De eerste labelrelease is onderweg + internationale boeking.
Pand48, 013, Nox, club Fifties, Stroomhuisje, Catwalk, Technootjes Festival etc.

Eigen producties: ‘When I make music I always have an emotion or a sort of story in my mind that I like to express. My music is really an exaust valve for me.

Melodies are working for me, you can float around with them and there to remember’

Hyde Park

Mijn muziek is ontzettend dansvloer-gericht.

Arwin Lee

From 2000 on, Arwin Lee has sporadically appeared on several radar scopes in the dutch techno scene. As of 2007 he has gained several residencies in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. Since 2009, he is the co-founder and co-host of the concepts "Prikkeldraad" and "A Night With..." in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Arwin Lee has always stretched his conception of music by implementing modern technology with equally modern trends in minimal techno music. This results in dynamic and somewhat abstract dj sets which truly try to find the limit of what is possible and of what your imagination can comprehend. You can always expect it deep and loud with Arwin Lee.
